Associate Professor Stewart Nicol, a researcher from the University of Tasmania, has uncovered some remarkable differences between Tasmanian echidnas and their mainland counterparts, challenging the long-held belief that echidnas across Australia are essentially identical.

In a recent review, Nicol highlights the distinct characteristics of Tasmanian echidnas, from their diet and breeding patterns to their behavior and body functions. What's particularly interesting is how these echidnas have adapted to their environment. In Tasmania, they enter true hibernation during autumn, a behavior not observed in their desert-dwelling relatives, who experience only brief periods of reduced activity.

Breeding patterns also vary significantly. Tasmanian mothers wean their young quickly with rich, high-fat milk, while echidnas on Kangaroo Island take much longer and produce milk with lower fat content. Even beak shapes differ, with southern echidnas sporting longer, flatter beaks designed for probing deep into the soil for grubs.

These differences, Nicol suggests, are a result of echidnas' ancient migration from New Guinea during an ice age, when they colonized Australia and rapidly adapted to diverse environments.

"Echidnas essentially colonized an entire continent and reshaped themselves to suit every corner of it," Nicol observes. This rapid adaptation, he argues, happened too quickly to be fully captured in existing genetic studies.

The implications of these findings are significant, especially for Tasmania. Nicol warns that zoos, wildlife carers, and conservation managers may be relying on general guidelines that are specific to one regional echidna form and not applicable to the unique Tasmanian population.

With over 40 years of echidna research under his belt, Nicol is now calling for a comprehensive genetic study across Australia to fill in the gaps in our understanding, particularly regarding echidnas in the tropics, where little research has been done.

"We now have a lot of information about the most southerly echidnas, but very little has been done with the echidnas in the tropics," he says.

This research not only sheds light on the incredible adaptability of echidnas but also highlights the importance of region-specific conservation efforts. It's a fascinating reminder of the diversity within a single species and the need for ongoing, detailed research to fully understand and protect these unique creatures.
